Malibu passes "Tobacco Retailers Registration Ordinance"

As of November 14th, Malibu has passed what is called the "Tobacco Retailers Registration Ordinance" which will entail three string operations a year in order to decrease the sale of tobacco to minors.  Evidently this has been a problem in Malibu, with a guardian to a Malibu High School student being quoted as saying that Malibu is "a pretty easy place to buy cigarettes."  To avoid further branding of the city as such, the three string operations will be enacted upon every registered tobacco vendor with what is called a "youth decoy" who will attempt to purchase tobacco.  If supposed vendor were to allow the sale of tobacco to the decoy, their tobacco license would be suspended for a minimum of three months.

Judge Rejects Malibu Lagoon Lawsuit

Today in San Francisco, Judge Ernest H. Goldsmith has ruled against the opposition by three environmental groups to the Malibu Lagoon overhaul project, called the Malibu Lagoon Restoration and Enhancement Plan; ultimately taking the side of the state which ruled in favor of the Malibu Lagoon overhaul in October 2010.   The Coastal Commission says that this project will be starting next June as it can only take place during the summer.  According to the Malibu Patch, "Proponents say the project will improve oxygen circulation and the general health of the lagoon. Opponents say it will harm the lagoon and species will die."

A good friend of Areté's, Georgienne Bradley, was featured in this month's Malibu Magazine's 10 Random Questions of 10 Extraordinary People.   Congratulations to Georgienne on her work promoting the passage of AB 376, which would ban the sale and distribution of shark fins in California. Buy Malibu Magazine this month to check out her interview!  Here's a little sneak peek from the interview:
"If you could change one thing about our world, what would it be and why?
Apathy.  Indifference and apathy stand in the way of so many dreams."

R.I.P. Rhoda May Adamson Dallas

A big piece of Malibu royalty, Rhoda-May Adamson Dallas, passed away on October 14th at the age of 94 of natural causes in her Studio City, California home.  Born on Valentine's Day, 1917, Rhoda-May was the granddaughter of Frederick H. Rindge who bought and essentially built up Malibu in 1892 and daughter of Frederick Hastings and May Knight Rindge.  As a child, Rhoda-May spent a lot of time at what is now the Adamson House, built in 1930 as a retreat for her parents. She was the first "Adohr-able" baby in the dairy's ad campaigns, and later in life too Rhoda-May worked on the dairy farm that her parents opened, "Adohr Farms," whose name is dervied from "Rhoda" spelled backwards.  Her and her siblings Sylvia and Merritt started Adamson Co. which oversaw and ran their parents' real estate holdings, and in 1972, they donated 138 acres of land to Pepperdine University.  Rhoda-May remained an active part of Malibu throughout her life, and will be missed.
