This is a picture I took yesterday from a property of ours in the Malibu Colony.  In some weeks, I will be writing a piece about the ins and outs of the Colony, but until then I'll whet your appetite with this picture.  

Malibu History

A little bit of Malibu history for your Thursday..!

Originally settled by the Chumash Indians, Malibu was called “Humaliwo,” which translates to “where the surf sounds loudly.”  The modern day name Malibu derives from this, with the “hu” prefix no longer being pronounced.  From the late 19^th century until 1938, Malibu was owned by a wealthy family, the Rindges. Frederick Rindge originally bought the property at a now laughable $10 an acre.  Malibu is one of the most affluent places in the world, but it is also prone to natural disaster such as fire and earthquakes. There are many residential areas in Malibu, all with their own distinctive names and histories, along with many beaches in varying degrees of “trendiness” or “exclusivity.” Every week starting this week we will be showcasing a different area in Malibu on Thursdays, starting with the Los Angeles County Line next week.

You have the Kardashians.  You have the Trumps.  You have the Hiltons.  But have you met the Rindges?  Frederick Rindge used to own all of Malibu, from the late 1800's until 1938.  He and his wife Rhoda had three children, Samuel, Frederick (v 2.0), and Rhoda (v 2.0.)   Rich off of Massachusetts based Union Oil Company, he bought Malibu for a now laughable $10 an acre.
